Get a Haircut and Get a Real Job

One of the things that people always ask when you're at university is what you plan to do when you graduate. Some people have a definite career in mind, so this question is easy for them to answer. Some people know that they're going to spend a year abroad, so the excitement overrides any thought of a 'serious' job for at least the time being. If you're one of those who is somewhere in the middle, and completely unsure what you are going to do, it can be quite daunting. There are always plenty of people out there trying to offer guidance or career planning, and while it's never a bad idea to do your research, you shouldn't feel too much pressure to conform to the norms of society. It's possible that with a general degree, you may not be able to find your 'dream job', but many people starting out at university have no idea where their eventual career path will lead them.

Jobs in advertising can be both lucrative and challenging, providing opportunities to access your creativity and practise those persuasive language skills that have lain dormant since you did debating in college. If you're considering moving south, like many do when they finish their degrees, you could consider looking for media sales jobs in London, as the industry is reasonably easy to get into, provided you are willing to fetch coffee and make photocopies for at least a little while. Media sales jobs can be quite competitively sought after, and you may not get an account management position as a graduate, but if you work hard as an intern, it may well pay off in the long run.

Life as a student isn't as easy as uninstitutionalised people have themselves believe, and your looming future isn't always at the forefront of your mind. With studying for exams, practicing with your sports team, or just relaxing at the student bar, employment plans sometimes get pushed to the side. You don't need to keep your CV at hand for constant revision, but it could pay to give it an ounce of thought every once in a while. Perhaps there are some jobs in media sales that would be ideally suited to you. Think on it.
