Roses
The summer term has started with a bang with the annual War of the Roses! Although York overall unfortunately lost to Lancaster, the volleyball Shield was again taken home by York. The weekend started off with the mixed match on Saturday morning, which was very exciting. York started down 2-0 but managed to fight back to a 3-2 victory (see Nouse article). The men's match on Saturday afternoon was won comfortably (3-0) by our strong men's team. On Sunday morning, the women went up against the strong Lancaster team, who play in the league above the York women. Nevertheless, York managed to start off with a 2-0 lead, but was unfortunately beaten 3-2 in an ironic reverse of the mixed match score. Overall, the volleyball club acted as a strong and supportive group cheering each other on and having a good night out on Saturday, and I think all of us had a great weekend!
Presidents weekend
The next big event coming up is Presidents weekend during the last bank holiday weekend in May (28-29-30). As usual, we have many fun volleyball and social activities planned, and an elegant dinner on Saturday night. We're hoping to welcome lots of our alumni to catch up with old friends and make new ones.
Beach tournaments
The summer is coming, and there will be various beach volleyball tournaments this term. amongst which the Beach Student Cup in Bournemouth on 5-6 June and a large number of Volleyball Beachfests. We're hoping to send many of our players out to defend the York honour!
Elections
We will have elections again soon to bring in a new UYVC committee for 2010/2011. Please give it some thought and decide if you would like to run for a position. Positions elected will be:
- President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- Merchandise rep
- Webmaster
- Men's Captain
- Women's Captain

The UYVC committee wishes everyone a happy new year full of volleyball fun! We look forward to the Spring term with a number of volleyball events.
Student Cup finals
Many congratulations to the UYVC women's team, who qualified for the finals of the Volleyball England student cup! The finals will take place on the 13th and 14th of February, and it promises to be an exciting weekend with many challenging matches! For more information, see http://www.volleyballengland.org/National_Cups/Student_Cup.php.
Another event to look forward to this term is Varsity, the yearly competition with York St. John university. Varsity will take place on the weekend of 27th and 28th February and the volleyball club will participate with the men's team, the women's team, and a mixed team. For more information about Varsity, please have a look at http://www.yusu.org/sport/varsity.
BUCS matches
This term, both the men's and the women's team will have a number of matches to play. The men will play against Hull and Liverpool John Moores, and the women will face Keele in the second round of the Knockout cup, and Newcastle, Sheffield Hallam, and Sheffield as part of the regular league. Good luck to both teams!
Socials
Next to all the serious volleyball, there will also be enough opportunities for some relaxing, a drink and a chat the coming term. The first social is planned for Wednesday the 20th of January and the theme is Pretty in Pink - see the Facebook event for more information: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=259292117161&index=1.

After a long silence, here are some bits and pieces of volleyball news from last term! Roses
Roses 2009 was another victory for York, we beat Lancaster by a 115-point margin! See this Nouse article for more information about Roses 2009. The volleyball teams did quite well too, with convincing wins for our mixed team as well as the men's team, and a good fight put up by the women's team against the strong Lancaster team. President's weekend Another volleyball weekend in May constituted President's weekend 2009. It was a fun weekend full of volleyball and socializing and a beautiful dinner at the Hilton hotel. Many congratulations to this year's award winners: Lisa Breitschuh (player of the year and most valuable player at president's weekend), Janette Chow (most improved player), Janis Koknevics (player of the year and most improved player), and Ben Brown (most valuable player at president's weekend). Beach tournaments The summer is coming, and there have been many beach volleyball tournaments to show it. Quite a few of our players participated in one or all of them: the Beach Volleyball Student Cup in Bournemouth (30 & 31 May), the beach volley tournament in Whitby (14 June), the tournament in Bridlington (4 & 5 July), and coming up is the York VolleyFest at York College (12 July). Clearly, there have been enough opportunities to play volleyball in the sun, and some of our players managed to go quite far in these tournaments. Elections We had elections in the beginning of June to bring in a new committee for 2009/2010. Positions elected were: - President: Joshua Chipman
- Secretary: Annelies Vredeveldt
- Treasurer: Michal Kovac
- Merchandise rep: Saad Siddiqi & Lukas Thoeni
- Webmaster: Annelies Vredeveldt
- Men's Captain: Janis Koknevics
- Women's Captain: Lucy Porter
Congratulations to the new committee! That's it for now, if you have any more news items to put up on the website,
