The UYVC committee wishes everyone a happy new year full of volleyball fun! We look forward to the Spring term with a number of volleyball events.

Student Cup finals

Many congratulations to the UYVC women's team, who qualified for the finals of the Volleyball England student cup! The finals will take place on the 13th and 14th of February, and it promises to be an exciting weekend with many challenging matches! For more information, see http://www.volleyballengland.org/National_Cups/Student_Cup.php.

Varsity

Another event to look forward to this term is Varsity, the yearly competition with York St. John university. Varsity will take place on the weekend of 27th and 28th February and the volleyball club will participate with the men's team, the women's team, and a mixed team. For more information about Varsity, please have a look at http://www.yusu.org/sport/varsity.

BUCS matches

This term, both the men's and the women's team will have a number of matches to play. The men will play against Hull and Liverpool John Moores, and the women will face Keele in the second round of the Knockout cup, and Newcastle, Sheffield Hallam, and Sheffield as part of the regular league. Good luck to both teams!

Socials

Next to all the serious volleyball, there will also be enough opportunities for some relaxing, a drink and a chat the coming term. The first social is planned for Wednesday the 20th of January and the theme is Pretty in Pink - see the Facebook event for more information: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/event.php?eid=259292117161&index=1.

July 2009 News

After a long silence, here are some bits and pieces of volleyball news from last term!

Roses
Roses 2009 was another victory for York, we beat Lancaster by a 115-point margin! See this Nouse article for more information about Roses 2009. The volleyball teams did quite well too, with convincing wins for our mixed team as well as the men's team, and a good fight put up by the women's team against the strong Lancaster team.

President's weekend
Another volleyball weekend in May constituted President's weekend 2009. It was a fun weekend full of volleyball and socializing and a beautiful dinner at the Hilton hotel. Many congratulations to this year's award winners: Lisa Breitschuh (player of the year and most valuable player at president's weekend), Janette Chow (most improved player), Janis Koknevics (player of the year and most improved player), and Ben Brown (most valuable player at president's weekend).

Beach tournaments
The summer is coming, and there have been many beach volleyball tournaments to show it. Quite a few of our players participated in one or all of them: the Beach Volleyball Student Cup in Bournemouth (30 & 31 May), the beach volley tournament in Whitby (14 June), the tournament in Bridlington (4 & 5 July), and coming up is the York VolleyFest at York College (12 July). Clearly, there have been enough opportunities to play volleyball in the sun, and some of our players managed to go quite far in these tournaments.

Elections
We had elections in the beginning of June to bring in a new committee for 2009/2010. Positions elected were:
  • President: Joshua Chipman
  • Secretary: Annelies Vredeveldt
  • Treasurer: Michal Kovac
  • Merchandise rep: Saad Siddiqi & Lukas Thoeni
  • Webmaster: Annelies Vredeveldt
  • Men's Captain: Janis Koknevics
  • Women's Captain: Lucy Porter
Congratulations to the new committee!

November 2008 News

Match Results

The Men's team have had a mixed start to the season. Their first game against Sheffield saw a comfortable 3-0 win after only having trained together for an hour. However, the lack of training time made itself known in the next 2 games against Manchester and Sheffield Hallam with the team losing in straight sets. This week sees the men travelling to Liverpool to face their first team. Confidence is high after seeing Liverpool lose to Sheffield.

It has been a tough start for the women this year with 2 away games and 2 losses. The first, versus Bradford, was not helped by the lack of clear court markings. Against Sheffield the women had to cope with sun in the eyes and a tough opposition. The season is set to get better as the team develops and moulds together. Next week's game against Bradford at home should show the improvements seen in training.

Both teams will be travelling to Leeds next Sunday (23rd November) to compete in the Student Cup qualifiers. More news on that after the day.

Elections

Elections took place earlier this term to complete the committee. The positions elected were:
  • Men's Captain: Jack Butcher
  • Women's Captain: Lisa Breitschuh
  • Social Secretary: Janette Chow
  • Webmaster: Jon Stammers (unchanged and uncontested...)
  • Ordinary Members: Annelies Vredeveldt and Maiko Uesaki
  • Press and Publicity: Anastasia Harunova
There were also elections held amongst the beginners to elect a representative to sit on the club committee. This is a new position for this year to allow the thoughts and needs of the beginners to be voiced by one of their own. Nicola Pinnell stood forward to take the position and was elected.

Many congratulations to all of the new committee members!

Wine Tasting Social

Monday of week 5 saw the first "official" social of the term. It took the form of a wine "tasting" but there was no spitting the wine out at this very sophisticated event. I'm sure that everyone who attended will agree it was a great night and thanks should definitely go to Soph for arranging such a brilliant event! No doubt a similar evening will take place in the near future, let's just hope that "The Rep" can remember the next one...
